Permanent Eyeliner Brief History

It is documented that some of the earliest permanent makeup dates back to the late 19th century in Europe. Some of the first treatments were done by Sutherland MacDonald - he was promoting “year-round” cheek complexion. The record shows that it was then adopted and brought to the USA by a tattoo artist and became popular around the 1930s.

Permanent Eyeliner Benefits Overview

There are many reasons why my clients come in for a permanent eyeliner consultation. The most common is achieving a consistent daily look that won’t smudge or smear throughout the day - it certainly helps take a few minutes off of the morning routine. When the warmer month approach, clients are looking to get waterproof eyeliner that will endure any beach, lake, or pool activity.

Other clients are looking to fill in sparse lashes for a more defined look. I have also worked with many alopecia clients and they have left thrilled with their new look! Truth is that everyone has their own reason but the convenience is undeniable.

Permanent Eyeliner Frequently Asked Questions

The process includes inserting pigment into the top layers of the lashline. This gives the appearance of traditional penciled eyeliner, minus the hassle of having to reapply every day.

Permanent Eyeliner is a procedure that is categorized under permanent makeup. However, like many other procedures, permanent eyeliner is actually semi-permanent. It differs from a traditional tattoo because the artist does not deposit the pigment as deep into the epidermis as a traditional tattoo - although many do refer to it as an eyeliner tattoo, this is incorrect. As you might have already guessed, there is also a difference in the pigment and ink used in the procedures.

What is Permanent Eyeliner?

Is Permanent Eyeliner painful?

This is probably the most asked question from my clients. Especially with the eyeliner procedure because it is such a sensitive area to begin with. Reasonably, many of my clients are nervous at first because I work so close to their eye. We use a topical numbing agent, that in my experience, has always resulted in a comfortable session. I have never had a client stop a session or appointment because the pain was not tolerable. Some clients say the area remains sensitive immediately after the procedure but aside from that, no one seems to mind. In fact, most of the clients that have also received Microblading, state that it is less painful that the brow procedure.

How long does permanent eyeliner last?

As previously mentioned, the procedure is actually semi-permanent. You can expect the healed results to last anywhere between 3-5 years. Of course, this differs for every client depending on the type of skin you have and the products you use.

Is Permanent Eyeliner Safe?

A lot of my clients ask me about any adverse reactions in the initial consultation. I always review the permanent eyeliner candidacy paperwork with them - it runs through anything that makes them a poor candidate for the procedure. I am also transparent about the pigments, machines, needles, etc. used throughout the procedure. We use the top industry standard for cleaning and protecting the client during the procedure.

Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare Instructions

  • Healing periods differ for all clients. It is important to let your body fully heal on its own. Do not rush the scabbing process, this is one of the most important steps for maximizing results. The scabs may be slightly annoying and itchy but it is important not to pick at them. Removing scabs before they are ready to flake off on their own can result in loss of pigment. This will cause your final healed results to look faded.

  • Keeping the area moisturized is an absolute must. You’ll leave your appointment with an ointment sample which can be precisely applied with a “Q-Tip”.

  • DO NOT TOUCH, RUB, OR SCRATCH THE EYE OR EYE ORBITAL AREA.

  • It is important to avoid the following: Facials, Saunas, Gyms, Cosmetic Treatments, or any other activity that may expose the eye area to irritation or chemicals.

  • It is recommended to avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 24hrs after your procedure. If you can avoid contacts for 72hrs, I would recommend it.

  • Do not use mascara until your results are fully healed. Apply mascara will disturb the area and used mascara can introduce bacteria into the healing area

  • Remember, following these instructions through the healing process (roughly 10 days) will determine your results. A few days of care will serve you well!!

Post-Permanent Eyeliner - What to expect after you leave your appointment.

Day 1

Your new eyeliner look will be pronounced; it will appear dark and defined. Many clients are concerned at this point, wondering if it will always be this bold. The answer is, no - it will fade into the look you desire in the weeks to come.

Day 2

You may still have some swelling at this point - this is normal. Remember, avoid scratching or touching and use the topical cream that was provided in your take-home bag

Days 3-5

I usually get calls and texts on days 3-5. This is when the scabbing and flaking starts to take place. However, keep in mind that this is completely normal. It is paramount that you refrain from pulling, peeling, or scratching off the scabs and flakes.

Days 6-8

Your body will continue to heal and you may still be seeing some of the scabbing and flaking. This is normal, remember to avoid touching the area.

Day 9

At this point, you can probably resume your normal make-up routine with caution. If you notice you are still not healed enough, refrain from introducing any chemicals to the area.

Days 10+

Each client is different but at this time you are through most of the healing process. Now it is more of the waiting game… In approximately 3-4 weeks the final color will set in and you will be able to enjoy your final new look!
